GETTING THERE AND AROUND

Air

Fiji Link (tel. 672-0888, www.fijiairways.com) flies to Kadavu’s tiny Vunisea Airport, also known as Namalata Airport, on the central eastern side. Flights go to and from Suva (F$106 one-way) on Mondays, and to and from Nadi (F$232 one-way) most other days. During busy periods, the airline may separate you from your luggage or fellow travelers with a follow-up flight within 30 minutes or so; everyone on Kadavu is used to this flexibility and will know how to handle the change of plans, so don’t fret. You may find it economical to book your international flight to/from Kadavu directly, so that the local leg will be included.

Island Hoppers (tel. 672-0410, [email protected], www.islandhoppersfiji.com) offers charter flights to the Kadavu airport for small groups on your own schedule.

Most resorts are a boat ride away from the airport at Vunisea, on the central-eastern side. Prearrange your boat transfer to be picked up from the airport by resort staff. Depending on the tide, you may have to walk out to the boat in ankle-deep water to board. It’s a scenic ride between 45 minutes and 2 hours, depending on your final destination, so keep your sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, camera, and waterproof jacket handy. Boats vary in terms of comfort level and safety equipment; in rough weather everything could get wet.

Pacific Island Air (tel. 672-5644, [email protected], www.pacificislandair.com) flies charter 6-seat or 10-seat amphibious seaplanes from Nadi Airport to land directly at the beach in front of certain resorts in Kadavu.
